Frequently Asked Questions About Lockboxes

How safe are lockboxes?

Lockboxes are considered safe for key storage, but they are too easily the most crime-proof systems in the industry. Deciding whether a lockbox provides robust security really depends on what level of security you need for your property. Lockboxes are difficult – but not impossible – to break into, yet they make a popular choice for realtors and property owners to securely store their keys. However, you probably don’t want to store keys for a location that houses your most important valuables within a  lockbox.

Can lockboxes be broken into?

Yes, just like door locks can be broken into. However, you can reinforce lockboxes with additional security layers like visible security cameras, outdoor lighting, motion sensors, alarms, and other forms of deterrents. The location in which a lockbox is placed does in fact make a big difference in lockbox security.

Where should lockboxes be placed?

Lockboxes are usually placed on the front door of a property, but some people place them on side doors or back doors for more discretion – which we recommend. If your home only has a front door, we recommend purchasing a higher quality locks and using other security systems like smart locks, CCTV cameras, and alarms for additional security layers

Can you fix a frozen lockbox?

If your lockbox freezes in low temperatures, you can try to use a metal tool like a screwdriver to chip the ice off the lockbox opening. You can also use a blow dryer, space heater, or hot water to thaw a lockbox. We recommend using a metal tool to scrape the ice off and then applying a lock safe lubricant to further assist in the thawing process.

What are the main benefits of lockboxes?

Lockboxes are convenient, as they allow property owners to let people into the property without having to be physically present. For example, many realtors or property renters allow visitors, prospective buyers, or repair people into the property by verifying their identity and then allowing them to enter the lockbox to get the property’s keys. Lockboxes allow for rapid entry as simply having the proper code – or in the case of smart lockboxes – the proper unlocking mode on your phone – allows you to enter the property in a sheer matter of seconds. Lcokboxes allow you to allow a greater number of people to enter or view your property much faster, allowing landlords or real estate agents to show more properties to more people.
